Meet our Surgeons

The surgeons at Rocky Mountain Associated Physicians have over two decades of cumulative experience in the surgical treatment of Morbid Obesity. The surgeons have an established reputation for being world wide leaders in the field of Bariatric Surgery, as well as innovators in patient education and rehabilitation. All of the surgeons perform laparoscopic and open procedures.

Utilizing their comprehensive knowledge and expertise, each patient that has surgery through Rocky Mountain Associated Physicians is provided with an extensive follow-up program. This program assists the patient in managing the post-operative physical elements of bariatric Surgery as well as the transition and implementation of the lifestyle that is required to achieve and maintain optimum health.

Each surgeon has their own unique personality and life interests. The common bond that exists between them is their desire to assist patients in achieving the health goals and quality of life that is desired.

Sherman C. Smith, M.D., F.A.C.S

Dr. Smith has a broad background in general surgery and he has taken a special interest in surgery for morbid obesity. He has been involved in thousands of gastric bypass procedures for individuals who have been unable to lose weight through other methods.

A Provo, Utah native, Sherman C. Smith was a Hinkley Scholar at Brigham Young University. He completed his undergraduate work in 1972 with high honors and graduated summa cum laude. He earned a U.S. Army Health Professions Scholarship and again graduated with honors from the University of Utah Medical School in 1976. From 1976 to 1981, Dr. Smith served his internship and residency at the Fitzsimons Army Medical Center. He is a retired Lt. Colonel in the U.S. Army Reserves. He served his Country as a surgeon in Operation Desert Storm.

Dr. Smith is Board Certified in General Surgery.

He is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and the Southwest Surgical Society, a member of the American Medical Association, the Salt Lake Surgical Society and the Utah State Medical Association. He has served as president of the Salt Lake Surgical Society and was an assistant clinical professor of surgery at the University of Utah from 1987 to 1992. He is on staff at St. Mark’s and LDS hospitals.

Dr. Smith enjoys an active outdoor life with his wife Barbara, and their five children. Favorite family outings include boating, water skiing and trips to their cabin. Bicycling, cross country and downhill skiing activities allow him to enjoy the beauty of the intermountain west while keeping physically fit. Dr. Smith studies and speaks German fluently and enjoys literature and history. As a compassionate physician, providing hope for individuals battling morbid obesity brings him great satisfaction. His experience has confirmed that surgery for weight control can be effective and a turning point in the lives of his patients.




Steven C. Simper, M.D., F.A.C.S

Dr. Simper’s expertise and passion are in performing minimally invasive laparoscopic surgery. His first bariatric procedures were in 1984 at Wilford Hall Medical Center, in Texas.

He joined Rocky Mountain Associated Physicians in 2001, at the time in which laparoscopic bariatric surgery was in its infancy. Over the years, with continuing education and preceptorships he has added the lap-band, laparoscopic duodenal switch, and revisional bariatric surgery to his repertoire.

He was a presenter at the 2006 and 2007 National Bariatric meetings (ASMBS), and is active in publishing papers and furthering knowledge as to the surgical treatment of obesity.

Dr. Simper is a native of Brigham City, Utah. After fulfilling his Air Force commitments and training, he returned to Utah in 1999 to be closer to his family and the outdoors. He has six children, and his avocations include reading, fishing, mountain biking, hiking and hunting.



Rodrick McKinlay, M.D., F.A.C.S.

Dr. Rodrick McKinlay joins Rocky Mountain Associated Physicians as a board certified general surgeon with expertise in minimally invasive—or laparoscopic—surgery. In addition to the surgical treatment of obesity, his practice involves a wide range of minimally invasive gastrointestinal surgery, including hernia repair, gallbladder removal, anti-reflux surgery, and the surgical treatment of spleen and adrenal disorders.

Dr. McKinlay graduated summa cum laude from Brigham Young University in 1993 and then received his medical degree from the University of Utah in 1997, where he graduated with honors in medicine and surgery. After completing General Surgery residency at the University of Arizona, he began a minimally invasive surgery (MIS) fellowship at the University of Kentucky, focusing on research in MIS. He concluded the clinical portion of the fellowship at the University of Maryland.

Dr. McKinlay is Board Certified in General Surgery. He is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. In addition to striving for top-quality surgical care using the latest technology, Dr. McKinlay emphasizes treating the whole patient with respect and attention to detail. Seeing the change that can occur in a patient's life after weight loss or other surgery is what he enjoys most about caring for patients.

He loves to spend time with his family, especially in the outdoors. He particularly enjoys playing soccer, running, and skiing. Fluent in Spanish, he also enjoys literature and the arts.
